2015 Château de la Crée Santenay Rouge Premier Cru Gravières

The Gravières belongs to the area immediately adjacent to Chassagne and is located from south to southeast with an altitude of 230 to 260 meters. The word Gravieres in English refers to "Gravel" that we can find on all plots, from the upper part of the hill down. The top layer of the soil is dominated by clay, while digging deeper leads to more sand structure. Gravières is perhaps the most prestigious plot in Santenay. The Gravières vineyard is only 0.40 Ha in size and was planted around 1975.

The generous wines of this sunny vintage stand out. Things moved very quickly in 2015, both in the vineyards and in the winery. Flowering took place at the beginning of June, followed by veraison in mid-July, with the start of the harvest at the end of August. The weather dictated the pace, resulting in beautiful grapes, the foundation of a great vintage. The wine has had 20 months of aging in French oak barriques, 50% of which are new oak. In addition, the wine has also had a long bottle aging in the beautiful cellars of the Château. As with all wines, La Crée releases its wines much later than most Burgundy wineries.

The SANTENAY GRAVIÈRES is a fantastic 100% pinot noir that emphasizes minerality in both the nose and the mouth. The nose is light and subtle with an emphasis on ripe black fruit and spicy characteristics (cinnamon). The tannins are integrated and discreet. A pleasant wine with a strong personality. Located just south of Chassagne Montrachet, Santenay is the southernmost village of Burgundy's famous "Cote D'or" ("Gold Coast") region. Santenay's etymology is most likely connected to the word "Sanctus", which refers to a sacred place before the Christian era. The appellation, with a total of 140 ha of planted vines, consists of three areas, one next to Chassagne, one around the village and one just south of the village. It is mainly a Pinot Noir appellation these days, but the Chardonnay reveals high potential there.
