Cascina Fontana Barolo is produced from nebbiolo grapes grown on steep hills in the heart of the Barolo wine region, in particular on its own three selected cru vineyards, Villero (cru Villero) and Valletti (cru Mariondino) in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto and Gallinotto (cru Giachini) in the municipality of La Morra. The grapes from these plots contribute to the unique characteristics of a Cascina Fontana Barolo: complexity, structure, elegance, acidity, fruit, minerality.
Following the tradition of the Fontana family, the grapes are harvested, distilled, pressed and vinified separately from each location. Once fermentation is complete, the wines are assembled and then aged for two years in 25-27hl blunt - large traditional barrels made from Slavonian oak. After this period, the wines then undergo a further year of maturation in cement basins before being bottled. Cascina Fontana Barolo, produced from our three cru vineyards, also undergoes a minimum aging of 6 months in the bottle prior to the market launch. The wines are not filtered and no chemical additives are used in both the vineyard and the winery. Pure fruit.
Barolo is a wine that requires patience. The long-lasting vinification (note: of well-made Barolos) with a long maceration on the skin gives a concentration of extract and tannins that give it a great ability to age and improve for more than decades. The Cascina Fontana Barolo is not made commercially and therefore has plenty of time to develop. The result is profound and serious, a wine to drink in the company of your family and your best friends - and at the best moments of your life.
This is a complex wine that is full of character and elegance in every respect. Although the color of a Barolo is never deep, the wine has a great depth and concentration with balanced silky tannins and a balanced acidity. With some time, the Cascina Fontana Barolo develops softness, while the aromas of primary fruits and fermentation give way to a more complex bouquet of licorice, tar and roses and a host of other sensations. Cascina Fontana Barolo has a very long finish.
Located in Perno, the heart of the Barolo, 5 hectares of top vineyards are passionately run by the couple Mario and Luisa Fontana. Mario is the example of a young winemaker who believes in tradition while also trying to approach the product of wine intelligently.
Thanks to his great example, his great uncle Bartolo Mascarello has acquired a lot of knowledge about traditional winemaking.
He tries to maintain the old tradition, pursuing the finesse in Barolo. To achieve the optimal result, he cuts healthy grapes in the summer months to limit the yield, the so-called "vendemmia verde" these are wines that can mature for several decades!
