2016 Mas d'en Gil Coma Vella

Masia Barril, the first winery to produce wines in the DO Priorat, has regained its original name, Mas d'en Gil, since 1998, when it was taken over by the Rovira Carbonell family. Located in Bellmunt, 350 meters above sea level, this bodega is blessed with a specific microclimate with warm, humid southeast winds, which give the wines a complex and differentiated character.

Coma Vella belongs to the top range of red Spanish wines from this domain. If you want to taste a Spanish wine with a perfect price-quality ratio from the famous region of the Priorat, don't hesitate. The fruit is the protagonist here, perfectly intertwined with the wood. A sultry Mediterranean touch, with sufficient acidity, make it a particularly seductive wine. Up to 60% vieilles vignes are used, mainly Grenache and Carignan. The other cépages come from vineyards that are also older than 15 years. Coma stands for valley (hill) and Vella for old.

Dark red in color. In the nose a nice mixture of Mediterranean spiciness, garrigue, and lots of red and black fruits - redcurrants, blackcurrants, cherries, raspberries - followed by a discreet touch of vanilla and sweet notes of mocha and cocoa. In the mouth an explosion of fruit with nicely defined tannins and good acids that give structure to the whole. Long finish with subtle mineral notes. Coma Vella needs some time in the glass. After some ventilation, the wine opens up in depth and opens up in its grandeur. Priorat with class, a reflection of its terroir and with pure fruit.
