The Poggio Verrano Tre Toscana is the beautiful SUPERTUSCAN !!! Fruity blend of Alicante, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A real Tuscan as a Tuscan should be. You can taste the herbs and fruit and have a delicious long aftertaste. Wonderful and justified reviews for a wine with an excellent price/quality ratio.
Located in the village of Montiano, this tenuta was founded in 2000 by Francesco Bolla and his family. Montiano is part of the commune of Magliano-in-Toscana, in the province of Grosseto, known as the wine-growing area of Morellino di Scansano. Here, in the coastal region of the Tuscan Maremma, their south-southwest oriented vineyards are located about 15 km from the Mediterranean Sea. At an altitude of 170 to 300 meters above sea level, the vineyards are planted with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Alicante, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc grape varieties. The planting density is 6,700 vines per hectare. The total vineyard area covers 27 hectares, of which the rock-strewn soil consists naturally of lime and clay.
After years of assisting the Bolla family in Soave (Veneto), winemaker and owner Francesco Bolla was drawn into the Etruscan landscape of the Tuscan Maremma. The Mediterranean climate and the cool, salty sea breeze have a particularly beneficial effect on the vineyards. Striving for perfection, Francesco receives valuable advice from his good friend Carlo Ferrini, one of the most respected Italian oenologists who also works for Barone Ricasoli and Poliziano. Francesco first selects the best grapes in the vineyards, which are then picked by hand. The yield is low: only 1 kg of grapes per vine. The alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After this fermentation, there is a slow maceration in small stainless steel vats, which are not sealed. The 'hat' (chapeau) is pushed down with precision and caution during this 'maceration'. Francesco's malolactic fermentation takes place in oak barriques. The wine cellar is completely underground and consists of three levels, so that the grapes and must are moved entirely by gravity. The well-structured and fruity cuvée 'Poggio Verrano 3' is bottled unfiltered. Broad and deep scents come across sultry with fine aromas of cherry fruit. At the first start we smell strong, even somewhat rustic smells and it feels pure nature. Contrary to what the nose might suggest, the wine has a medium body and fresh flavors that swell into the fuller finish with hints of cherry fruit and wild strawberries. Pleasant notes of mint are revealed in the beautiful length. This Poggio Verrano has been one of our best-selling wine for years and that is not surprising because it is a delicious complete wine with a more than excellent price/quality ratio.
Fun fact: The 2012 was only released in 2021. The wines are always bottle aged for a very long time before they are released to the market.

Don't expect a fruit bomb (rare in Italy anyway), but a juicy, supple, firmly structured whole with dark, partly animal tones, a lot of spicy wood and some freshness. A wine that begs for food, stews, game and blue cheese, for example. Despite the completely different grape mix, I had to taste the style of Brunello di Montalcino to some extent. The founder of the Poggio Verrano domain (27 hectares, 15 kilometers from the coast) is Francesco Bolla, who first worked for the large family business Bolla, but became a winegrower herself in 2000.

By not following the DOC rules and experimenting with international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, pioneering vintners made table wines at the end of the last century that were better and more expensive than many Chianti DOCs. To distinguish between the real slobber table wines and these top wines, the term Super Tuscan was coined. At Tenuta Poggio Verrano they have only been making their Super Tuscans since 2000, but the result is amazing. But that cannot be otherwise with Francesco Bolla as the owner, grandchild of Alberto Bolla, the 'Godfather' of the Amarone wine from the Veneto region. Together with the famous winemaker Carlo Ferrini, he is fast becoming the undisputed top among the Super Tuscans.
