The Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow sparkles with layers of dark red fruit, mocha, sweet spices, flowers and spices on the palate. The Gravelly Meadow is surprisingly accessible for a young Diamond Creek wine. There are still plenty of underlying tannins with ints of raspberry jam, cinnamon and cloves. Earthy, cedar, jammy and ripe blackberry with a spicy expansive finish. It is certainly advisable to let this wine mature for a few more years to allow the wine to reach full maturity. It is also possible to leave it until at least 2040, but we do not have that patience.
The Gravelly Meadow comes from a five-acre gravelly terroir. Originally it was a prehistoric riverbed where currently the vines compete for moisture and have to root very deeply. Gravelly Meadow is Diamond Creek's lowest yielding vineyard. For 2017, the blend was 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc.
Fun fact: Diamond Creek was sold to Louis Roederer in March 2020.
Founded in 1968, Diamond Creek is California's first Estate Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Visionary pioneer Al Brounstein defied convention and planted modern Bordeaux varieties on remote Diamond Mountain. The three vineyards produce a very small amount of top grapes. The Diamond Creek are very elegant wines with great depth and richness cherished by connoisseurs around the world.
